Washington County, MO – Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Crash on Hwy 21 Near Swallow Rd

May 14, 2025

Washington County, MO (May 14, 2025) – A serious motorcycle accident occurred Tuesday afternoon on Highway 21 near Swallow Road, leaving a 20-year-old DeSoto man with significant injuries. The crash, which happened around 3:15 p.m., involved a rear-end collision between a Yamaha FZ6 motorcycle and a Chevrolet 3500 pickup truck, both traveling southbound.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident unfolded when the motorcycle collided with the rear of the Chevrolet. The force of the impact caused the motorcyclist to be ejected from his bike, sustaining serious injuries despite wearing a helmet and safety gear. The injured rider was quickly transported by Washington County Ambulance to Mercy Hospital South for advanced medical care.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 26-year-old man from Potosi, was not injured. Both vehicles sustained moderate to minor damage and were able to be driven from the scene.

Trooper C.J. Walker of Troop C led the investigation, confirming that both vehicles were heading in the same direction when the motorcyclist failed to stop in time. The exact cause remains under review, though preliminary findings point to speed or following distance as contributing factors. The collision temporarily disrupted southbound traffic as emergency crews managed the scene and provided medical aid.

We send our best wishes for a full and swift recovery to the injured motorcyclist and his family during this difficult time.

Motorcycle Accidents in Missouri

Motorcycle-involved collisions remain a persistent and growing concern across Missouri, especially on rural highways like Route 21 in Washington County. Unlike passenger vehicle occupants, motorcyclists face increased vulnerability in the event of a crash—even when wearing helmets and other protective gear.

Rear-end impacts, while often considered minor in car-to-car collisions, are especially dangerous for motorcyclists. In this incident, the young rider was ejected from his motorcycle after striking the rear of a slower-moving Chevrolet truck. Ejections typically result in more severe trauma due to the lack of structural protection, often requiring urgent medical intervention.

Missouri has made strides in promoting motorcycle awareness and safety, but incidents like this highlight the ongoing risks. According to recent state crash data, young motorcyclists—especially those under age 25—are overrepresented in serious injury collisions. Speed, inexperience, and distracted driving are commonly cited contributing factors.

Highway 21, a route known for its varied traffic flow and hilly terrain, presents added challenges for riders who must be constantly alert to changes in vehicle speed or lane positioning. Maintaining proper following distance, anticipating brake lights, and adjusting speed to match traffic patterns are essential steps to preventing rear-end collisions.

For injured motorcyclists, recovery may involve extended rehabilitation, costly medical care, and financial setbacks. Navigating insurance claims and liability can be complex, especially when serious injuries are involved.
