Washington Heights, NY (July 4, 2023) – An automobile accident took place in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan that claimed the lives of two people while leaving four others injured.
At around 6:45 a.m. on July 3, a Hyundai Elantra was traveling north on Audubon Avenue when it collided with a Jeep, which was traveling west through the intersection with 179th Street.
The impact of the crash caused the Jeep to overturn and strike a second vehicle, which was identified as a possible second Elantra.
Authorities believe that the first vehicle was reported stolen at the end of June, which may have contributed to the vehicle driver’s erratic behavior when they ran a red light at the intersection.
A 16-year-old and a 15-year-old were both pronounced deceased as a result of the injuries they suffered in the accident after being transported to New York Presbyterian Columbia Hospital.
Two other victims, ages 15 and 16, suffered critical injuries and were transported to Harlem Hospital. Two additional victims were injured as a result of the accident.
The New York Police Department is currently investigating the accident.
We hope the injured victims are able to recover quickly.
Our condolences go out to the families of the two people who died in this crash.
