West Miami-Dade, FL (October 22, 2024) – A serious accident occurred on the Turnpike in West Miami-Dade on Monday afternoon, involving three vehicles and resulting from heavy machinery that caught fire while being towed. The incident took place near Southwest Eighth Street and prompted a swift response from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to reports, the machinery being towed ignited, leading rescue crews to separate it from the vehicle to extinguish the flames. As firefighters worked to put out the fire, which was aided by rain, the situation escalated when three vehicles became involved in a crash. Two vehicles veered off the roadway into a grassy area, while a third vehicle slid across the roadway and collided with a county fire rescue vehicle that was on-site attending to the fire.
Emergency responders transported one driver to West Trauma Center for treatment, while the other two drivers were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
As officials continue their investigation into the crash, traffic slowdowns are expected in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike. Currently, three lanes remain open to facilitate the flow of traffic.
