West Village, NY (September 20, 2020) – A subway train in New York City’s West Village derailed on Sunday, September 20th after debris threw it from its track.
The accident took place at the 14th Street/Eighth Avenue station at about 8:15 a.m.
Several commuters reported seeing a man throwing metal construction pieces onto the subway tracks and laughing. Police have since located the 30-year-old male and taken him in for questioning.
Police officers stated that around 300 feet of the subway’s third rail collapsed due to the derailment, which also knocked out power to every track in the station.
Another 200 feet of track was heavily damaged in the incident.
An officer from the Metropolitan Transit Authority said that all 135 passengers were evacuated from the A train.
An official from the fire department said three of the passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. One victim was transported to a nearby hospital for additional medical care.
A second train heading uptown and carrying dozens of passengers was stuck in a tunnel due to the power outage caused by the derailment.
This incident is still under police investigation.
