Wynantskill, NY (December 19, 2022) – According to North Greenbush Police, a Wynantskill house fire early on Sunday morning, December 18th, claimed the life of an 82-year-old woman. Authorities with the North Greenbush Fire Department say that the fire started at 17 Bellemead St. in Wynantskill shortly after 5:00 AM.
Reports show that smoke detectors and a heavy smoke stench woke up the residents. Two adults were able to safely exit the structure, but it was claimed that a third adult, an 82-year-old woman, had not. The two family pets were also successful in escaping.
When first responders arrived, the house was heavily engulfed in flames. They quickly went inside to look for the missing person. Within minutes, firefighters found the missing resident, but she could be saved.
Police published the name of the deceased victim on Monday, December 19th, and identified her as Antonette Oswald.
With support from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the North Greenbush Police and the Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety Fire Investigation are conducting a joint investigation.
The fire’s origin is still being looked into at this time.

Deadly Apartment Fires in New York
A national average of around 2.5 deaths and 9.8 injuries per 1,000 residential fires was reported in 2018, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Throughout New York state, fatalities triggered by residential fires rose by no less than 50% between the years 2016 and 2017. Data also shows that during the same year, a total of 73 civilian fatalities were the consequences of serious residential fires in New York. Tragically, such overwhelming events often leave victims and their loved ones with severe pain and suffering by no fault of their own.
After losing a loved one in a careless, reckless, or otherwise negligent New York accident by no fault of the victim, it may feel like no amount of compensation could make you feel complete again. While it is true that no financial restitution can ever fully make up for your losses, filing a wrongful death claim against the responsible party or parties can go a long way toward helping you find some semblance of peace again.
