Celina, OH (January 1, 2026) – A devastating two-vehicle crash in Celina left ten individuals injured on Monday night, including eight minors, after a driver reportedly failed to stop at a posted intersection.

The collision occurred around 9 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 29 and Riley Rd. According to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, a 17-year-old male from Celina was driving along Riley Rd when he failed to yield at a stop sign and entered the path of an eastbound Honda Odyssey traveling on SR-29. The vehicles collided with significant force, resulting in multiple injuries.

Several individuals suffered serious harm in the crash. The teen driver, his young passenger, and 40-year-old Emily Vaubel of Botkins sustained critical injuries and were transported by emergency crews to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys for further care. The Honda Odyssey, driven by 42-year-old Ryan Vaubel, was carrying his wife, five children ranging in age from 10 to 16, and a 17-year-old family friend. All seven passengers were taken to Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater for treatment.

First responders worked quickly to assess and treat the victims at the scene. While authorities confirmed that most occupants were properly restrained, three juveniles in the Odyssey were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Fortunately, alcohol and drugs are not believed to have played a role in the incident.

The 17-year-old driver is expected to be cited for failure to stop at the intersection. The crash remains under active investigation by local authorities.

Our thoughts are with all those hurt in this serious collision, and we extend our best wishes for a full recovery.

Intersection Accidents in Ohio

The recent collision in Celina illustrates the devastating outcomes that can result from failure to follow posted traffic controls, especially at rural intersections like Riley Rd and SR-29. With ten individuals injured, most of them minors, this incident highlights the crucial need for driver attentiveness and strict adherence to traffic laws.

Stop sign violations are one of the most common contributors to serious intersection crashes across Ohio. According to statewide traffic safety data, crashes involving failure to yield at stop signs often occur on less-patrolled rural roads where visibility may be reduced, or drivers may underestimate approaching traffic. In this case, the combination of a young, inexperienced driver and a lapse in compliance led to a high-occupancy vehicle being struck with significant impact.

Injuries among minors are particularly concerning, especially when some are found to be unrestrained. This crash underscores the ongoing importance of child passenger safety, as well as the need for parents and guardians to regularly check seat belt use, especially in multi-passenger situations.

Community resources such as driver education courses, traffic enforcement in high-risk areas, and public safety outreach can play a key role in preventing these types of incidents. For the families impacted by this crash, the road to recovery may involve ongoing medical treatment, emotional trauma, and financial burdens associated with multi-party injuries.
