Idaho Crash Reports: ITD Portal, State Police and Fees

Who Has Your Idaho Crash Report
The Idaho Transportation Department sells copies of Idaho crash reports, including reports written by Idaho State Police troopers. ISP troopers investigate crashes on interstates, state highways and secondary highways, city police take crashes inside their cities, and outside city limits the county sheriff or ISP responds. Under Idaho Code 49-1306, the investigating officer must send a written report within 24 hours of finishing the investigation, and those reports are not confidential.
ITD reports are sold through the ITD crash report portal, run by the department’s Office of Highway Safety. You can search by name, city, county, the last four digits of a driver’s license, the case ID or a date range. A PDF of one report costs $7.00 plus an Idaho.gov transaction fee, paid at checkout, and a purchased report can be downloaded for up to 7 days. Crash records are public in Idaho, so anyone can order one.
A new report takes a few weeks to show up online, and ITD says it can take much longer depending on the agency involved. If yours isn’t there, ITD asks you to send a request to the Office of Highway Safety at (208) 334-8000 or [email protected]. Idaho State Police also takes requests for crash reports and its other records through the public records portal linked from isp.idaho.gov.

Police Reports From Idaho Cities and Ada County
Boise, Meridian, Idaho Falls and Pocatello police each release their own reports, and the Ada County Sheriff releases its crash reports through BuyCrash. Start with the department that responded to your crash:

Ada County releases crash reports to the people involved only when nobody was seriously injured or killed. Reports from local agencies can also reach the ITD portal, on a timeline that depends on the agency.
What Idaho Drivers Must Report
Idaho Code 49-1305 requires the driver in any crash that injures or kills someone, or damages any one person’s property by more than $1,500, to notify police immediately by the quickest means available. Inside a city, the call goes to the local police. Everywhere else it goes to the county sheriff or the nearest Idaho State Police office, and if the driver can’t make it, another occupant who is able must.
Idaho has no statewide written crash report for drivers to file. The written report comes from the investigating officer, on a form the state approves (Idaho Code 49-1307). A city can require its own accident reports by ordinance under Idaho Code 49-1313, so ask the city police if your crash happened inside city limits.
Idaho Insurance Rules After a Crash
The owner of a registered vehicle driven in Idaho, by the owner or by anyone with the owner’s permission, must keep liability coverage of at least $25,000 for injury or death to one person, $50,000 for two or more people and $15,000 for property damage per crash (Idaho Code 49-117 and 49-1229). A first violation is an infraction with a $75 fine. A second conviction within five years is a misdemeanor carrying a fine of up to $1,000, up to six months in jail, or both.
Policies must include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, but the named insured can reject either one or both in writing, and that rejection carries over to renewals (Idaho Code 41-2502). Personal injury protection (PIP) is not on the Idaho Department of Insurance’s required coverage list. The liability insurance of the driver at fault helps pay the other side’s injury and property losses.
Under Idaho Code 6-801, a person who was partly to blame can still recover as long as their negligence was not as great as the other driver’s, and the award shrinks by their share of the fault. A person found 50% or more at fault recovers nothing.

All six rows come from Idaho Traffic Crashes 2025, the annual report from ITD’s Office of Highway Safety, which counted 28,127 crashes statewide that year. Seventy-two of the people killed in 2025 were vehicle occupants not wearing a seat belt.

- Idaho Crime Victims Compensation Program. Run by the Idaho Industrial Commission. A vehicle crash qualifies only when the driver meant to cause injury or death, or when it involved one of the criminal violations listed in Idaho Code 72-1003. That list includes driving under the influence (Idaho Code 18-8004), so DUI crashes can qualify. - Trauma centers. Idaho has no Level I trauma center. Its Level II centers are Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene, Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello and Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise is a Level II pediatric trauma center, per the state’s trauma facility designations.

How do I get an Idaho State Police crash report?
Buy it on the Idaho Transportation Department’s online crash report portal, which sells Idaho crash reports, including those written by Idaho State Police troopers. One PDF costs $7.00 plus an Idaho.gov transaction fee. New reports take a few weeks to appear, and a purchased copy stays available to download for 7 days. ISP also takes records requests through its own public records portal.

Give it time, since a new report takes a few weeks to appear online and can take much longer depending on the agency. If it still isn’t there, ITD asks you to contact its Office of Highway Safety at (208) 334-8000 or [email protected]. You can also ask the records office of the police department or sheriff that responded.
Is Idaho a no-fault state?
Idaho does not require personal injury protection, the coverage no-fault states rely on. The liability insurance of the driver who caused the crash helps pay the other side’s losses. Under Idaho Code 6-801, a person partly to blame can still recover a reduced amount, but anyone 50% or more at fault recovers nothing.
How long do I have to file a car accident claim in Idaho?
Two years for injury and wrongful death claims under Idaho Code 5-219(4), and three years for property damage under 5-218(3). A claim against the state must be filed with the Secretary of State within 180 days (Idaho Code 6-905). A claim against a city or county goes to its clerk within 180 days (6-906).
