Patoka, IN (January 6, 2026) – Emergency crews responded to a serious head-on crash in rural Patoka that left three people injured, including one in critical condition. The collision occurred on January 5 at approximately 5:13 p.m. along State Road 65, about half a mile south of County Road 400 North. Responders from Patoka Township and Union Fire Departments arrived quickly to extricate victims trapped in the vehicles.

According to reports from the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, a silver 2002 Lexus RX3 was traveling southbound when it crossed the center line and collided with a northbound tan 2017 Chrysler Pacifica. The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles and required rescue teams to assist injured occupants from the wreckage. All victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment; one individual sustained critical injuries, while at least two others suffered non-life-threatening harm.

The Gibson County Sheriff’s D.A.R.T. unit and Princeton Police assisted in securing and documenting the scene. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence to determine the contributing factors in the collision. No further updates have been released regarding charges or the current conditions of those injured.

We send our thoughts and well wishes to all those injured and hope for their full recovery.

Head-on Collisions in Indiana

Crashes involving a direct impact from opposing lanes of traffic are among the most dangerous, particularly on rural roads like State Road 65, where speed limits are higher, and shoulders are limited. In rural areas like Patoka, a single misjudgment or moment of distraction can have devastating consequences, especially when lanes are not divided by barriers.

Head-on collisions frequently result in severe or fatal injuries due to the force of impact. Indiana traffic data shows that these types of crashes are often caused by lane departures, fatigued driving, or failed passing attempts on two-lane roads. Even with prompt emergency response, the outcomes are frequently serious, as seen in Monday’s incident.

Drivers are encouraged to remain focused, avoid crossing center lines, and never attempt risky maneuvers on undivided highways. Law enforcement agencies across the state continue to remind motorists of the importance of staying alert and adhering to traffic laws in both rural and urban areas.
