Chouteau County, MT (January 10, 2026) – A single-vehicle crash early on January 7 claimed the life of one teenager and left another injured along US Highway 87 in Chouteau County. The incident occurred near mile marker 44, just north of Fort Benton, and prompted a response from the Montana Highway Patrol and local emergency services.
According to MHP, two 18-year-old females were traveling northbound in a Chevrolet Camaro when the driver failed to navigate a left-hand curve. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled, ejecting both occupants from the car due to neither wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Tragically, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released pending notification of the family. The passenger sustained injuries in the crash, though her current condition has not been made public.
The roadway was temporarily closed as authorities conducted an on-site investigation and cleared the wreckage. Montana Highway Patrol continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including speed, road conditions, and other possible contributing factors.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the young woman who lost her life and hope for a full recovery for the surviving passenger.
