Norfolk, VA (January 12, 2026) – Traffic along I-64 West in Norfolk was brought to a near standstill Saturday afternoon following a crash involving a tractor-trailer near the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. near mile marker 273.7, where Virginia State Police say a tractor-trailer swerved after braking abruptly to avoid a potential collision. During the maneuver, the truck struck one of two Truck-Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) situated within an active work zone.
The crash led to a shutdown of the westbound right lane and right shoulder, causing extensive traffic delays and backups stretching over 6 miles toward the Willoughby Bay Bridge. Emergency crews responded promptly, and one passenger in the TMA vehicle sustained minor injuries as a result of the impact.
Crews remained on-site for an extended period, managing traffic control and investigating the sequence of events. The presence of construction equipment in the area added complexity to the scene clearance and further contributed to the congestion.
The Virginia State Police have confirmed that their investigation into the incident is ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
We extend our best wishes for a swift recovery to the injured individual and appreciation to those working to keep our highways safe.
