Elkridge, MD (January 13, 2026) – A devastating two-vehicle crash on southbound I-95 near Maryland Route 100 left one man dead and several others injured early on Monday morning, causing major shutdowns along the interstate during rush hour.
Maryland State Police confirmed that the driver of a Freightliner garbage truck, 47-year-old Lazaro Miranda of Baltimore, was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. when a dump truck collided with the back of a parked tractor-trailer on the right shoulder of I-95 southbound.
Two passengers in the garbage truck, identified as 22-year-old Juan Cormachi and 35-year-old Fausto Flores, were seriously injured and airlifted to Maryland Shock Trauma by the MSP Aviation Command. The driver of the tractor-trailer, 42-year-old Abdul Abubakar, was also transported to a local hospital. Another occupant of the tractor-trailer was reportedly uninjured.
The collision forced authorities to shut down all northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 near exit 43A. Helicopters landed on the roadway to evacuate victims, further complicating traffic. By around 9:30 a.m., two southbound lanes were reopened to ease congestion. Commuters were urged to use U.S. Route 1, Route 29, or Maryland Route 295 as detours.
