Tempe, AZ (January 19, 2026) – A multi-vehicle accident early on Sunday morning left three people injured after a driver reportedly ran a red light near the intersection of Baseline Rd and Priest Dr, according to Tempe Police officials.
The crash took place on January 18 when a vehicle failed to stop at a red signal and struck another car passing through the intersection. The force of the impact caused both vehicles to spin out and collide with two self-driving Waymo vehicles that were also in the area at the time.
Tempe Fire Department and police units arrived quickly and assisted all parties involved. Medics transported three individuals from the initial two vehicles to a nearby hospital. According to authorities, all three were listed in stable condition following the incident.
One of the Waymo vehicles was unoccupied, while the other had a single passenger who did not sustain any injuries. Officials noted that the autonomous vehicles were not responsible for the crash but were involved as a result of the initial collision.
Due to the extent of the scene, police closed the intersection for several hours to allow for proper investigation and cleanup. Officers collected evidence and interviewed witnesses as they worked to determine the full circumstances leading up to the wreck.
At this time, the incident remains under investigation. No citations or arrests have been reported.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals, and we hope for their full and swift recovery.
