Chicago, IL (January 19, 2026) – A woman lost her life early on Sunday morning in a violent single-car crash on DuSable Lake Shore Drive near the Stevenson Expressway and McCormick Place, according to Chicago police.
The collision occurred around 2:21 a.m. when a man driving northbound on DuSable Lake Shore Drive lost control of his vehicle while carrying multiple passengers. The vehicle first struck a pole before crashing into the median.
Emergency responders arrived swiftly and transported the driver and three passengers to the University of Chicago Medical Center. They were listed in good condition. However, one female passenger, 21-year-old Joyce Qiyile of Falls Church, Virginia, sustained traumatic injuries and was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit. It is unclear whether speed, impairment, or another factor played a role in the incident.
