Grant Co, WA (January 21, 2026) – A tragic collision on State Route 283 claimed the life of a 53-year-old Ephrata man on Sunday evening, after a suspected impaired driver crossed the center line and struck his vehicle head-on, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 5:45 p.m., about seven miles northeast of George. Authorities reported that a 39-year-old man from Quincy was driving southbound on SR 283 when he veered into the northbound lane, colliding directly with the Ephrata man’s vehicle.
Emergency crews responded swiftly, but the 53-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the impact. His identity has not yet been publicly released pending family notification.
The 39-year-old driver was transported to Quincy Valley Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. He has since been charged with DUI and vehicular homicide in connection with the incident.
SR 283 was closed for several hours as law enforcement conducted an investigation and crash reconstruction. The Washington State Patrol is continuing to examine the circumstances that led up to the crash.
