Suffolk, VA (January 26, 2026) – A hit-and-run accident on the southbound side of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel late Sunday left a 70-year-old man injured and prompted a response from multiple emergency units.
The incident was reported just after 6:00 p.m. along the I-664 corridor. According to dispatch communications, the injured driver was inside a blue Jeep Compass when he was struck by another vehicle that fled the scene. The man could not provide details about the extent of his injuries but remained in the vehicle as crews responded.
Units from Engine 11, Ladder 11, EMS 251, Battalion 2, and Medical 1 were dispatched and coordinated with Newport News officials to manage access and response staging near the tunnel. Medical teams worked to assess the condition of the driver and determine appropriate care.
It remains unclear whether the suspect vehicle has been identified. Authorities have not provided information about potential witnesses or surveillance from the bridge-tunnel area.
