Indio, CA (January 29, 2026) – Two people were hospitalized and one driver was arrested following a suspected DUI head-on collision early Tuesday morning at the intersection of Calhoun St and Avenue 48 in Indio, according to local police.
The crash occurred shortly after 5:00 a.m. on January 27. Investigators determined that a 28-year-old man driving a Lexus collided head-on with a Toyota operated by a 30-year-old man. The force of the impact left both vehicles with significant damage and prompted a full emergency response from Indio Police and fire crews.
A female passenger, 28, riding in the Lexus suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center along with the Toyota driver, who was reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities at the scene suspected that the Lexus driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. He was taken into custody and later booked at the John Benoit Detention Center on DUI-related charges.
As a result of the collision, multiple lanes were closed for more than an hour while investigators processed the scene and crews cleared the wreckage. All lanes were reopened around 6:30 a.m.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims, and we hope for a full and swift recovery.
