Why Are Crosswalk Crashes Especially Concerning?
Marked crosswalks are designed to provide a safer place for pedestrians to cross the road. Drivers are expected to yield to people walking within these designated areas.
Even so, crashes can still happen. Visibility, driver attention, and traffic flow may all affect how quickly a vehicle can stop when someone is in the crosswalk.
Older adults may face a greater risk in pedestrian collisions due to increased physical vulnerability. Injuries from blunt force trauma can be severe, especially when a person is struck by a moving vehicle. Crosswalk safety depends on both driver awareness and pedestrian caution at intersections.
