Albuquerque, NM (March 13, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash temporarily shut down Interstate 40 near Atrisco Vista in Albuquerque on Thursday night, March 12.
Emergency units responded after reports of a collision involving five vehicles along the interstate. Crews worked at the scene to manage traffic and remove damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Officials said no major injuries were reported in the crash. However, all lanes of Interstate 40 in the area were closed for a period of time while responders cleared the scene.
Traffic was later restored once the vehicles were removed and the roadway was deemed safe for travel again. The crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts remain with those affected as they recover.
Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Shut Down Major Interstates
Highways such as Interstate 40 carry large volumes of traffic traveling at high speeds. When several vehicles are involved in a crash, damaged cars and debris can quickly block multiple lanes.
Even when injuries are minor, responders may need time and space to safely remove vehicles and check the roadway. Tow trucks, emergency vehicles, and cleanup crews often require temporary lane closures to complete their work.
Traffic can also build rapidly behind a crash site on busy interstates. When lanes are restricted or closed, drivers may experience delays until the roadway is cleared and normal traffic flow resumes.
