Phoenix, AZ (March 16, 2026) – One person was killed, and three others were injured after a hit-and-run crash in the Maryvale neighborhood of Phoenix.

The crash occurred around 1:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, near the intersection of 61st Avenue and Indian School Road. Firefighters and emergency units responded after reports of a collision involving two severely damaged vehicles.

Authorities reported that the driver of one vehicle fled the scene, leaving their passenger, 18-year-old Marc Anthony Velazquez Serrano, seriously injured. Serrano was taken to a hospital but later died from his injuries. A man and a woman in the second vehicle were also hospitalized with serious injuries but are expected to survive.

Witnesses described extensive damage: a two-door sedan with both doors and the front grill ripped off, and an SUV with significant damage to the passenger side and hood. Debris from the crash was scattered across the roadway. Investigators believe the fleeing driver crossed into oncoming traffic before the collision, and they are reviewing whether speed or impairment played a role.

Authorities continue to search for the driver who fled the scene, and more information will be released as it is provided.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Serrano.

Why Hit-and-Run Crashes Are Particularly Dangerous

Hit-and-run accidents are especially dangerous because victims may not receive immediate care from the responsible driver, and critical evidence can be lost when the driver leaves the scene.

These crashes often occur when a vehicle enters oncoming traffic, runs a red light, or loses control, creating a high risk of injury for both the fleeing vehicle’s occupants and others on the road. Investigators rely on witness accounts, vehicle damage, and debris patterns to reconstruct the crash and identify the responsible party.

Prompt emergency response is crucial in these situations to treat injured passengers and prevent further harm.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
