What Factors Can Lead to Crashes at Rural Highway Intersections?
Intersections along rural highways can present unique risks, especially at night. Limited lighting, higher travel speeds, and fewer traffic controls may make it harder for drivers to judge distance and timing when entering or crossing a main road.
Turning movements, like entering a highway from a side road, often require careful timing. Misjudging the speed of approaching traffic can quickly lead to a crash. In some cases, visibility may also be affected by road design or surrounding terrain.
Vehicle size and angle of impact can also influence how severe a crash becomes. Side-impact collisions, in particular, may lead to more serious outcomes due to reduced protection compared to front or rear impacts.
