Pendleton, OR (April 23, 2026) – A 55-year-old woman lost her life after a crash involving an SUV and a tractor-trailer on Tuesday, April 21, near Pendleton.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on I-84 when a white Chevrolet Tahoe was heading east and struck the rear of a white Freightliner truck for reasons that remain unclear. After the impact, the SUV veered sharply to the right on wet pavement, lost control, and left the roadway before rolling multiple times.
Authorities identified the driver as Jeanette Lynn Row, of Pendleton. She was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe she was not wearing a seat belt at the time.
The driver of the Freightliner was not hurt in the collision. Traffic on the highway continued without disruption while emergency units responded to the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
What Factors Can Contribute to Loss of Control on Wet Highways?
Wet road conditions can significantly reduce traction between tires and the pavement, increasing the risk of losing control. When surfaces are slick, even small steering adjustments or sudden braking can cause a vehicle to slide or spin.
Rear-end impacts can also worsen these risks. The force of a collision may destabilize a vehicle, especially at highway speeds, making it harder for a driver to regain control. Larger vehicles like SUVs may be more prone to rolling if they leave the roadway at an angle.
Seat belt use is another key safety factor. Wearing a seat belt helps keep occupants secured inside the vehicle, reducing the chance of being thrown out during a crash. Even in rollover situations, restraints can greatly lower the risk of fatal injuries.
