Gray’s Creek, NC (April 23, 2026) – A tragic crash left one child dead and another seriously hurt after they were struck by a car in a Cumberland County neighborhood.
The incident happened just before noon on Thursday, April 23, in the 4000 block of Mena Dr within the Gray’s Creek Mobile Home Community, near the N.C. 87 and Sand Hill Rd intersection. Emergency units responded after reports that a vehicle had hit two young children.
Officials said an 18-year-old man driving a white Dodge Avenger went left of center while rounding a curve and struck the children, who were riding in a small electric toy car being pulled by their parents. The impact caused severe injuries to both kids.
Both children were airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. A 2-year-old child later died from injuries, while the older child remains seriously hurt. The driver stayed at the scene after the crash and was later taken to a medical facility.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Factors Can Lead to Residential Area Crashes Involving Children?
Crashes in residential neighborhoods often happen at lower speeds, but they can still lead to severe outcomes, especially when children are involved. Kids may be harder to see due to their height, and they can move unpredictably while playing or riding small toys.
Curves in neighborhood roads can limit visibility for drivers. When a vehicle crosses the center of the road, even briefly, the risk of hitting someone nearby increases. Distractions, speed, or unfamiliarity with the area can also contribute to these situations.
In many cases, children use toy cars, bikes, or scooters close to their homes. Drivers are expected to stay alert in these areas and be prepared to stop quickly. Clear sightlines and careful driving can help reduce the chance of a serious crash.
