What Makes Downtown Areas Higher Risk for Pedestrian Crashes?
Downtown areas often see a mix of vehicle traffic and foot traffic in close proximity. Intersections in these areas can be busy, with cars turning, stopping, and moving through while pedestrians are crossing.
Visibility can be affected by buildings, parked cars, and other obstacles. This may limit how quickly drivers and pedestrians can see each other, especially at intersections.
Traffic signals and timing also play a part. Pedestrians may try to cross quickly, while drivers may be focused on traffic flow. These combined factors can increase the risk of collisions in busy urban settings.
