What Happens When Vehicles Leave the Roadway After a Crash?
When a vehicle is forced off the roadway, the risk of severe impact increases, especially if trees or other fixed objects are nearby. Unlike other vehicles, these objects do not move, which can lead to more severe collisions.
Towing equipment, such as trailers, can also affect how a vehicle responds during sudden braking or impact. The added weight may increase stopping distance and reduce control.
Once a vehicle leaves the road, terrain plays a role in what happens next. Slopes, uneven ground, or wooded areas can cause further damage as the vehicle continues moving before coming to a stop.
