Why Head-On Passing Crashes Are Often Severe on Rural Highways
Head-on crashes during passing attempts are especially dangerous on rural highways where lanes are narrow, and traffic speeds are higher. When a driver crosses into oncoming traffic, there is often very little time for either vehicle to react.
These crashes frequently result in severe damage because both vehicles are moving toward each other at high speeds. Even a brief misjudgment during passing can lead to a high-impact collision.
Fire or engine damage may also occur in serious crashes, particularly when vehicles collide directly. Road design, visibility, and driver decision-making all play a role in how these incidents unfold.
