How Wrong-Way Crashes Often Occur and What Makes Them Dangerous
Wrong-way crashes happen when a driver enters a roadway in the opposite direction of traffic. This can occur due to missed signs, poor visibility, or driver confusion, especially on multi-lane roads. These incidents often take place on divided highways or busy city streets where traffic flows in both directions.
Collisions involving wrong-way drivers tend to be severe. Vehicles are usually moving at higher speeds and may collide head-on, increasing the risk of serious harm. Even when multiple vehicles are involved, the sudden nature of the situation leaves little time for others to react.
Road design, lighting conditions, and driver awareness all influence how these accidents unfold. Clear signage and proper lane markings can help reduce the chances of a driver entering the wrong side of the road.
