What Factors Often Contribute to Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Crashes?
Pedestrian hit-and-run crashes often happen at night when visibility is lower for both drivers and people walking near roadways. Poor lighting, dark clothing, and limited shoulder space can make it harder for drivers to see someone in time to stop safely.
Speed is another common factor, especially on highways where vehicles travel faster. At higher speeds, drivers have less time to react, and the impact is more severe. Road design can also affect safety, particularly in areas without sidewalks or marked crossing zones.
Driver behavior is frequently reviewed in these cases. Distraction, fatigue, or impairment may lead to delayed reactions. When a driver leaves the scene, it can also slow down efforts to identify what happened and who was involved.
