Salt Lake City, UT (April 29, 2026) – A semi-truck driver was hospitalized in serious condition Tuesday following a crash along Interstate 80 in Salt Lake City.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the incident occurred on westbound I-80 near 2700 West. Responding troopers found that the tractor had collided with a wall for reasons that have not yet been determined.
Emergency crews transported the driver to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The collision led to the closure of the two right lanes of westbound I-80, causing traffic delays in the area. Officials indicated the lanes would remain closed for approximately an hour and a half as crews worked to clear the scene and investigate the crash.
Authorities continue to review the circumstances leading up to the incident.
We wish the injured driver a full and speedy recovery.
What Causes Single-Vehicle Semi-Truck Crashes on Highways?
Single-vehicle crashes involving semi-trucks can occur for a variety of reasons, even without other vehicles present. Factors such as driver fatigue, distraction, mechanical issues, or sudden medical emergencies may contribute to a loss of control.
Highways like I-80 often involve high speeds and long stretches of driving, which can increase the risk of fatigue-related incidents. Additionally, large trucks require more time and distance to react to changing conditions, making sudden corrections more difficult.
Road design, weather conditions, or obstacles near the roadway—such as barriers or walls—can also play a role if a driver veers off course. These types of crashes highlight the importance of rest, regular vehicle maintenance, and staying alert behind the wheel, especially for commercial drivers covering long distances.
