What Factors Can Increase Risk for Pedestrians on Rural Roads
Pedestrians on rural or less-traveled roads may face increased risk due to limited lighting and higher vehicle speeds. Drivers may have less time to see and react to someone in the roadway, especially before sunrise or after dark.
Road design can also play a role, as some areas may lack sidewalks or designated spaces for walking or running. This can place pedestrians closer to moving traffic.
Speed is another key factor. At higher speeds, the force of impact increases, and the stopping distance becomes longer. These conditions can make crashes involving pedestrians more severe in rural settings.
