What Are the Risks of Crossing Streets Without Crosswalks in Nebraska?
Crossing a street outside of a marked crosswalk, sometimes called jaywalking, significantly raises the risk of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Drivers do not expect to encounter someone on foot in the middle of a block or near a highway interchange, which shortens their reaction time. In areas near interstates like I-680 in Omaha, traffic tends to move faster and lane changes are more frequent, making unexpected pedestrian crossings especially dangerous.
Stalled vehicles add another layer of complexity to these situations. When a car is blocking a lane, other drivers must swerve or change lanes quickly, often with reduced visibility of what lies ahead. A pedestrian crossing in those conditions may not be visible until it is too late for a driver to stop safely.
