North Bellport, NY (April 30, 2026) – Two people were hurt in a crash on Sunrise Highway near Station Road in North Bellport in the early morning hours of Thursday, April 30.

At around 5:25 a.m., Waldina Sanchez, 59, of Mastic was driving a 2012 Toyota Corolla westbound on Sunrise Highway when she lost control and struck the center median. As she attempted to return to the travel lanes, her vehicle was hit by a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Wesley Krupp, 70, also of Mastic.

Sanchez was taken to a hospital in serious condition. Krupp was taken to a separate hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Both vehicles were impounded for safety inspections.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We are thinking of both drivers as they receive medical care.

How Do Loss-of-Control Crashes Happen on Long Island’s Sunrise Hwy?

Sunrise Highway is one of Long Island’s major east-west corridors, carrying heavy traffic through both suburban and rural stretches of Suffolk County. Loss-of-control crashes on this road can happen for many reasons, including wet pavement, fatigue, distraction, or a sudden mechanical issue. When a driver loses control on a divided highway, the danger doesn’t end with the initial impact — re-entering traffic can put both the driver and others around them at serious risk.

Early-morning hours add another layer of complexity. Reduced visibility and lower traffic volume can give some drivers a false sense of security, leading to higher speeds or less focused driving. Center medians are designed to prevent head-on collisions, but striking one at speed can cause significant damage and may lead to a vehicle rebounding into active traffic lanes.
