How Chain-Reaction Highway Crashes Can Involve Multiple Vehicles
Chain-reaction crashes often occur on busy highways when traffic slows or stops unexpectedly. A single rear-end impact can quickly spread through multiple lanes, especially when vehicles are traveling at highway speeds, and following distances are reduced.
When a stopped or slowed vehicle is struck from behind, it can be pushed into adjacent lanes, creating secondary impacts with other vehicles. These multi-point collisions can increase the risk of injuries due to repeated impacts from different directions.
Investigators typically review traffic flow, vehicle spacing, and speed at the time of the crash to understand how the sequence of impacts unfolded. These findings help reconstruct how multiple vehicles became involved in the collision.
