Albuquerque, NM – Pedestrian Killed in Crash on Unser Blvd Near Spring Flower Rd

July 8, 2025

Albuquerque, NM (July 8, 2025) – A tragic crash involving a pedestrian left one person dead Monday morning in southwest Albuquerque. The incident occurred around 6:00 a.m. on Unser Blvd near Spring Flower Rd, just south of Gibson Blvd, according to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD).

Authorities say the pedestrian, a man who had arrived to assist his son whose black GM SUV had broken down in the southbound lanes of Unser, was struck by an oncoming white Chrysler minivan. Despite taking visible safety measures—wearing reflective clothing and activating the vehicle’s hazard lights—the man was hit alongside the disabled SUV.

Emergency crews responded quickly, but the pedestrian was fatally injured in the crash. The exact identity of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. The driver of the Chrysler minivan remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Unser Blvd was partially closed in the area for several hours as APD conducted a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. Additional details will be released as the investigation progresses.

Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s family during this incredibly difficult time.

Pedestrian Fatalities in Roadside Emergencies

Monday’s tragic incident in Albuquerque highlights the significant dangers pedestrians face—even when taking precautions—during roadside emergencies. Stopping to assist a disabled vehicle, particularly along busy roads like Unser Blvd, puts individuals at risk, even in broad daylight and with proper visibility gear.

Pedestrian fatalities in New Mexico are among the highest in the nation per capita, and roadside crashes remain a major contributor. In many cases, drivers either fail to reduce speed near disabled vehicles or do not recognize stopped vehicles or individuals until it is too late. Reflective clothing and hazard lights offer some protection, but visibility and driver attention are critical in avoiding these tragedies.

This crash also reflects a growing safety concern around secondary collisions during breakdown assistance—when someone offering help becomes the victim of a passing motorist. These heartbreaking cases highlight the urgent need for driver awareness and enhanced enforcement of New Mexico’s “Move Over” laws, which require drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching stopped vehicles with hazard lights.

For grieving families, the emotional toll of such a sudden and avoidable loss is devastating. In addition to coping with loss, families may face medical expenses, funeral costs, and legal proceedings.
