Allen County, IN (October 27, 2025) – A juvenile sustained life-threatening injuries in a collision involving an electric bicycle and a pickup truck early on Saturday morning in northeastern Allen County. The crash occurred around 1:36 a.m. on Roth Rd, just south of State Road 1, according to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies arriving at the scene discovered that a Ford F-150 and an electric bicycle had collided just a few hundred yards south of SR-1. Initial reports indicate that both the juvenile on the e-bike and the driver of the F-150 were heading north on Roth Rd at the time of the incident.
According to the preliminary investigation, the driver of the pickup truck attempted to pass the juvenile rider when, for reasons still under review, the electric bicycle veered left and struck the rear passenger side of the F-150. The juvenile was severely injured in the impact and was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the truck was not hurt.
Authorities also reported that alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, though it remains unclear who may have been under the influence. The Allen County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the incident.

E-Bike and Vehicle Collisions in Indiana
Collisions involving electric bicycles and motor vehicles, such as the one that occurred on Roth Rd, are becoming increasingly common as more people turn to e-bikes for recreation and transportation. However, e-bikes and motor vehicles share roads that are not always designed for mixed traffic, creating serious risks for riders, particularly in rural or low-light conditions.
This incident highlights several key concerns: nighttime visibility, roadway behavior, and potential impairment. E-bike riders, especially young individuals, are vulnerable in traffic interactions because of their lower speed and exposure. Unlike traditional bicycles, e-bikes may accelerate more quickly and operate differently than drivers expect, increasing the potential for unpredictable outcomes.
Indiana law treats electric bicycles differently depending on classification, but all riders must adhere to traffic safety rules, especially on shared roads. When an accident like this occurs, involving serious injuries and potential alcohol use, a full investigation is essential to determine liability and prevent future tragedies.
Victims of such accidents, or their families, may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, long-term care, and emotional distress, particularly when another party’s actions, such as unsafe passing or impairment, contribute to the incident. Early action, including gathering witness statements, obtaining police reports, and securing medical documentation, is critical in building a case for recovery.
This crash also serves as a reminder for all drivers in Allen County and throughout Indiana to slow down and exercise extreme caution when sharing the road with bicycles, especially at night and in areas with limited lighting. Awareness and patience can prevent devastating consequences.
