Andrew County, MO (August 8, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle crash that occurred on Wednesday morning along northbound Interstate 29, approximately seven miles north of St. Joseph, resulted in the death of one driver and left another with moderate injuries. The collision involved a merging vehicle and has prompted an in-depth investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s MCIU Team #1.
The crash took place just after 9:15 a.m. on August 7, when an 83-year-old man from St. Joseph, driving a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado, attempted to merge onto I-29 from southbound US-71. According to authorities, the driver made an abrupt left-hand turn into the path of a northbound 2024 Cadillac operated by a 64-year-old woman from Merriam, KS.
The Cadillac struck the driver’s side of the Colorado, resulting in a violent impact that forced both vehicles off the left side of the highway into the median. The pickup truck overturned, coming to rest on its driver’s side, while the Cadillac landed upright nearby.
Emergency services from Andrew County responded swiftly. The male driver was transported to Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph but was later pronounced deceased at 10:03 a.m. by Sheriff Grant Gillette. The female driver suffered moderate injuries and was also transported to the same facility for treatment.
Both vehicles sustained total damage and were towed from the scene by Blue Knight services. The accident drew the assistance of multiple agencies, including Andrew County Fire Department and EMS, and remains under investigation by Sgt. M.J. Miller and Sgt. J.M. Toal with the Major Crash Investigation Unit.
Our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased, and we wish the injured woman a full recovery.
Fatal Merging Collisions in Missouri
Merging accidents on Missouri interstates can have devastating outcomes, especially when involving high-speed traffic. Wednesday’s crash on I-29 near St. Joseph is a somber reminder of how a single moment of misjudgment during a merge can lead to irreversible consequences. In this incident, the sudden maneuver by the pickup driver created a dangerous conflict point that tragically ended in a fatality.
I-29, a critical corridor for both local and interstate travel, is no stranger to high-volume and high-speed traffic. Merging zones along this route, particularly near US-71, are often high-risk due to traffic congestion and limited acceleration space. This incident demonstrates the need for heightened awareness and patience when merging, especially for older drivers who may face physical or cognitive limitations behind the wheel.
The victim in this crash, an 83-year-old St. Joseph resident, was reportedly wearing a seatbelt, a factor that underscores how even proper safety measures can fall short in high-impact collisions. Meanwhile, the 64-year-old Cadillac driver also had her seatbelt fastened and fortunately survived with non-life-threatening injuries. Quick medical transport and coordination among first responders helped stabilize the situation quickly.
Crashes involving older adults are increasingly common in Missouri and often result in more serious injuries due to age-related vulnerabilities. It’s important for families and communities to have ongoing conversations about driving safety, reassessments, and alternatives when appropriate.
