Andrew County, MO (September 4, 2025) – Two people sustained serious injuries Wednesday afternoon in a high-impact crash at the intersection of US Highway 71 and Route B. The collision occurred around 3:31 p.m. and involved two vehicles that both came to rest in the median after the crash.
According to reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2006 Chevrolet was traveling westbound on Route B when the driver attempted to cross northbound US-71. At that time, a 2012 Nissan Maxima was heading north on US-71. Authorities say the Chevrolet failed to yield, resulting in the Nissan striking the driver’s side of the Chevrolet. Both vehicles skidded off the roadway and into the grassy median.
Emergency responders from the Andrew County EMS were quickly on the scene and provided medical assistance to both drivers. The 24-year-old male driver of the Chevrolet from Saint Joseph and the 23-year-old female driver of the Nissan from Maryville each suffered serious injuries. They were transported to Mosaic Life Care Hospital for treatment.
Neither vehicle was drivable and both sustained total damage. The Nissan was towed by Kizer’s, while the Chevrolet was removed by R&W. Troopers from Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop H, along with several assisting officers and the Andrew County Sheriff’s Office, helped manage the scene and are continuing to investigate the crash.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals and their families during this time of recovery.
Intersection Accidents in Missouri
Crashes at rural highway intersections remain a pressing safety issue in Missouri, particularly in counties like Andrew where state highways meet local routes. The collision at US-71 and Route B highlights the significant risk of crossing high-speed traffic without adequate clearance. In this case, a driver failed to yield and was struck on the driver’s side, resulting in serious injuries to both parties.
US-71 is a major north-south corridor with consistently fast-moving traffic. When intersecting roads like Route B lack traffic signals or turn lanes, drivers must rely on judgment and timing to enter or cross the highway safely. Any miscalculation, distraction, or obstruction in sightlines can result in devastating outcomes. Side-impact crashes—like the one reported here—are especially dangerous due to the limited structural protection on vehicle sides and the concentration of force on the driver’s compartment.
Additionally, failure to wear a seatbelt played a significant role in this incident. The driver of the Nissan was reportedly not restrained at the time of the crash, increasing the risk of more severe trauma during impact. This incident reinforces the importance of seatbelt usage, even for short local trips on familiar roads.
Beyond the physical consequences, intersection crashes can lead to complicated insurance claims, long-term rehabilitation, and emotional stress for those involved. Recovery for seriously injured individuals may include surgeries, therapy, and time away from work—making it critical to access the right support and information early in the process.
