Audrain County, MO (August 26, 2025) – A multi-vehicle collision on Monday morning on US 54 left two drivers injured after a Dodge Caravan crashed into two stopped vehicles near County Road 485. The crash caused major damage to all involved vehicles and resulted in a significant emergency response from local EMS and law enforcement.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred at approximately 7:10 a.m. on August 25, 2025. According to the report, a 2005 Dodge Caravan, driven by an 89-year-old man from Martinsburg, was traveling westbound on US 54 when he failed to stop for slowed traffic. The vehicles ahead, a 2014 GMC Terrain and a 2015 Mercedes ML350, were stopped to allow an uninvolved vehicle to make a turn when the Caravan collided with the rear of the GMC. The force of that impact propelled the Caravan forward into the rear of the Mercedes.
All three vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene by A1 Towing.
Emergency medical services transported the 34-year-old female driver of the Mercedes from Bowling Green to the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries. The 89-year-old male driver of the Dodge Caravan was transported to the VA Hospital in Columbia with minor injuries. The 31-year-old female driver of the GMC, from Vandalia, was not reported as injured.
An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Our thoughts are with those injured in this incident, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
Rear-End Crashes and Older Driver Safety in Missouri
Rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of traffic accidents, particularly in situations involving slowed or stopped traffic on highways like US 54. These crashes can result in serious injuries, especially when large speed differentials are involved or when multiple impacts occur, as seen in this three-vehicle chain reaction in Audrain County.
In this case, two vehicles were appropriately stopped to allow another driver to turn, demonstrating responsible roadway behavior. However, the trailing vehicle failed to stop in time, raising concerns about driver reaction time, situational awareness, and the challenges some older drivers may face behind the wheel.
Older adults, such as the 89-year-old driver involved here, may experience slower reflexes, reduced peripheral vision, and difficulties judging distances, which can increase the risk of collisions in rapidly changing traffic situations. While many older drivers operate safely, incidents like this highlight the importance of regular driving assessments and ongoing conversations about driving fitness with loved ones.
This crash also reflects the need for all drivers to maintain safe following distances and remain alert, particularly in areas with turning traffic and limited sightlines. Even brief distractions or assumptions about traffic flow can have serious consequences.
Those injured in multi-vehicle crashes may face extended recovery periods, mounting medical expenses, and complicated insurance matters. Early access to medical care, documentation, and support services can make a significant difference in the days and weeks following such an event.
