Aurora, CO (August 29, 2025) – A 70-year-old man was struck and killed early Tuesday morning while crossing East 6th Avenue in western Aurora, marking the second fatal pedestrian crash at this intersection in just days.
Aurora Police Department reports that the fatal incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. near the intersection of East 6th Avenue and Potomac Street. According to officials, the man was in a marked crosswalk when he was hit by an eastbound Ford F-150. Emergency responders quickly arrived and transported the injured pedestrian to a nearby hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the Ford F-150 remained at the scene and is cooperating fully with the investigation. As of Tuesday evening, police stated that neither alcohol nor speed appeared to be contributing factors.
The eastbound lanes of 6th Avenue were closed for nearly three hours while crash investigators processed the scene. Traffic was diverted until the roadway reopened around 7:30 a.m.
The victim’s name has not been released, pending notification by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Safety and Crosswalk Crashes in Aurora
Tuesday’s deadly crash at East 6th Avenue and Potomac Street tragically mirrors another fatal incident at the same intersection earlier this week, raising serious concerns about pedestrian safety in the area.
In this latest case, the victim was reportedly using the crosswalk—a space meant to provide safe passage for foot traffic. However, even designated crossings offer limited protection when visibility is low, especially during early morning hours when drivers may be less alert.
While police have ruled out speed and intoxication as factors, the incident still highlights the heightened vulnerability of older pedestrians, particularly in wide, multi-lane intersections like 6th and Potomac. Reaction times, poor lighting, and driver inattention often contribute to such tragedies, even when drivers are obeying traffic laws.
Intersections like this one—situated between residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and major commuter routes—require added safety infrastructure. This may include pedestrian-activated signals, enhanced lighting, improved signage, and roadway design modifications that reduce crossing distances.
Victims’ families are often left with not only grief, but also questions about how such crashes could occur, and what steps can be taken to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents.
Aurora’s Traffic Investigations Unit will continue examining all evidence, including vehicle data, surveillance footage, and witness statements, to determine the full circumstances behind the crash.
