Aurora, CO (August 4, 2025) – Police are actively searching for a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred late Sunday night on East Colfax Avenue. The collision, which happened around 9:52 p.m., claimed the life of a female pedestrian and has prompted an ongoing investigation by the Aurora Police Department (APD).
According to authorities, the woman was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on Colfax Ave near the on-ramp to Interstate 225. The driver responsible for the collision fled the scene without stopping to render aid or contact emergency services. When officers arrived, they found the woman deceased from her injuries.
Aurora police immediately initiated a search of the area and began working to gather surveillance footage and witness statements to identify the fleeing driver. No suspect vehicle description has been released at this time, and APD continues to urge the public to come forward with any relevant information.
The westbound lanes of Colfax were temporarily restricted near I-225 while investigators processed the scene and collected evidence. Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim pending notification of next of kin.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life in this tragic incident.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Hit-and-Runs in Colorado
Pedestrian deaths caused by hit-and-run drivers have been on the rise across Colorado, and Sunday’s tragic incident on East Colfax underscores just how dangerous certain intersections can be—especially after dark. With its proximity to a major interstate on-ramp, the stretch of Colfax near I-225 is heavily trafficked and often poorly lit, increasing risks for pedestrians attempting to cross or navigate roadside areas.
In hit-and-run collisions, the absence of aid from the at-fault driver significantly reduces the victim’s chances of survival. In this case, the driver’s failure to remain at the scene left the woman without immediate medical assistance, and she was pronounced dead upon the arrival of emergency responders.
Aurora has experienced a growing number of pedestrian incidents in recent years, driven in part by speeding, distracted driving, and poorly marked crosswalks. Nighttime visibility remains a critical factor, as many fatal crashes happen during evening hours when both pedestrian awareness and driver perception are diminished.
Under Colorado law, leaving the scene of an accident involving death or injury is a felony. Drivers involved in such collisions are legally required to stop, provide information, and offer reasonable assistance. Failing to do so not only endangers lives—it carries severe criminal and civil consequences.
For families dealing with the sudden loss of a loved one due to a hit-and-run, the road ahead can feel overwhelming. While police investigations focus on locating the suspect, grieving families often face unanswered questions, unexpected expenses, and legal uncertainty.
