Avenal, CA (January 6, 2026) – A violent collision involving multiple vehicles, including one that caught fire, left at least one person injured late Monday night near the Lassen Ave off-ramp from I-5, just south of the city of Avenal.
The crash was reported around 9:33 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-5 near the Lassen Ave exit. Early reports from the California Highway Patrol indicated that a white SUV was catching fire while a dark-colored SUV and a small sedan were also involved. One vehicle reportedly veered off the roadway and landed in a ditch, while another was fully blocking the intersection.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene, with medics providing care to at least one person suffering injuries. One subject was possibly pinned inside a vehicle, according to radio traffic, though details remain limited. Fire personnel addressed the vehicle fire while tow services were called to remove the disabled SUVs and sedan.
The crash resulted in a complete blockage of the off-ramp, creating significant delays and prompting a coordinated effort to secure the area. CHP confirmed that 2–3 vehicles were involved in total, and while fire was initially reported, responders confirmed the blaze was under control upon arrival.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the events that led up to the crash, including whether speed, impairment, or mechanical failure played a role.
We extend our thoughts to those injured and affected by this crash and hope for a full and safe recovery.
