Dangers of Nighttime Driving on Coastal Highways
Coastal routes like NC 12 present unique hazards, especially during nighttime travel. These roads often have limited lighting, narrower lanes, and stretches without median barriers, which can increase the risk of head-on collisions if a vehicle veers from its lane. In rural and coastal parts of North Carolina, visibility challenges are compounded by factors such as sharp curves, high winds, or wildlife crossing.
While the investigation into Sunday night’s crash is ongoing, the incident is a stark reminder of the importance of staying alert, reducing speed, and avoiding distractions when traveling after dark. Safety experts emphasize that even familiar roads can become more dangerous at night due to decreased reaction time and increased fatigue among drivers.
