Avoyelles Parish, LA (August 4, 2025) – A deadly two-vehicle crash Saturday night in the Echo community claimed the life of 59-year-old Rickey G. Maddox of Alexandria. The collision occurred around 9:00 p.m. on Louisiana Highway 1 and is now under investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop E.
Preliminary findings indicate that 34-year-old Romero H. Roberto, also of Alexandria, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado northbound on LA-1 when, for unknown reasons, he veered off the road and struck a 2013 Kubota lawn mower being operated on the shoulder by Maddox. The impact caused catastrophic injuries.
Emergency medical personnel transported Maddox to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities confirmed that Roberto was not wearing a seatbelt and emerged from the crash without injuries. Impairment is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash, and toxicology samples have been submitted for analysis.
State Police noted that the investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been announced at this time.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Rickey Maddox as they cope with this heartbreaking loss.
Roadside Fatalities and Impairment Risks in Rural Louisiana
The fatal collision on LA-1 in Avoyelles Parish is a tragic example of the unique dangers faced by individuals operating slow-moving vehicles or equipment near rural roadways. In this case, Rickey Maddox was reportedly using a Kubota lawn mower on the shoulder when he was struck by a full-size pickup truck—a situation that often results in fatal consequences due to the size disparity and lack of protection for the smaller vehicle.
Crashes involving suspected impaired drivers remain one of the leading causes of roadway deaths in Louisiana. In rural areas like Echo, reduced lighting, higher travel speeds, and lack of clear shoulder barriers can magnify those risks—especially when alcohol or drug use compromises driver judgment.
The fact that the at-fault driver was unrestrained and uninjured, while the victim suffered fatal injuries, underscores the cruel imbalance of outcomes often seen in impaired driving crashes. For the loved ones of Rickey Maddox, the sudden and preventable nature of this loss will leave lasting pain and unanswered questions.
As the investigation continues, determining the exact role impairment played will be critical in any legal proceedings. Equally important is ensuring that families affected by such tragedies have access to resources that support their emotional, legal, and financial recovery.
