Bakersfield, CA (August 6, 2025) – A woman was tragically killed in the early morning hours of Sunday after being struck by a pickup truck in a hit-and-run crash on Mount Vernon Ave at Oregon St, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Bakersfield Area Office.
CHP officials reported that the incident occurred on August 3 at approximately 1:46 a.m. Emergency personnel responded to the scene following a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian crash, but upon arrival, they found the driver had already fled the area. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical personnel.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman had been walking southbound along Mount Vernon Ave in the No. 2 lane, outside of a marked crosswalk, when she was struck by a white pickup truck. The vehicle was also traveling southbound and approaching Oregon St at an unknown speed when it hit the pedestrian.
The driver of the white pickup truck failed to stop and fled the scene before authorities arrived. As of now, the identity of the driver remains unknown, and CHP has not confirmed whether drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the woman whose life was lost in this tragic incident.
Fatal Pedestrian Hit-and-Runs in California
This heartbreaking collision on Mount Vernon Ave in Bakersfield is a stark reminder of the persistent threat pedestrians face on California roads—particularly when reckless drivers choose to flee the scene. The absence of accountability in hit-and-run crashes adds another layer of trauma for the victims’ families and makes enforcement and justice even more difficult to achieve.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, pedestrian fatalities have been rising steadily in recent years, with a significant percentage occurring during nighttime hours and outside of marked crosswalks. Roadways like Mount Vernon Ave—long, wide, and heavily traveled—often present high risks to those on foot, especially when crosswalks are spaced far apart or visibility is low.
What makes this incident even more tragic is the fact that the driver left the scene without rendering aid or calling for emergency help. Hit-and-run crashes are not only morally reprehensible but also criminal. Victims struck and left without assistance often have reduced chances of survival due to delayed medical response.
For families left behind, the aftermath is filled with grief, frustration, and unanswered questions. Seeking justice in hit-and-run cases often involves working with investigators, community members, and legal advocates to identify the responsible party and ensure they are held accountable.
