Baltimore County, MD (April 21, 2025) – A tragic hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning claimed the life of a 67-year-old man on Interstate 695 near Wilkens Avenue, according to the Maryland State Police. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on the I-695 inner loop, where the victim had pulled over to change a flat tire.
The man, identified as Junior Dunkley of Owings Mills, had parked his truck on the right shoulder and was outside the vehicle when he was struck by another car. The driver responsible for the collision fled the scene, leaving Dunkley critically injured on the roadside.
Emergency responders transported Dunkley to Shock Trauma, where he was later pronounced dead. The vehicle involved in the hit-and-run is believed to be a red 2005–2012 Toyota Tacoma.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is investigating the incident and has issued a public appeal for witnesses or anyone with information about the suspect vehicle.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Junior Dunkley during this time of loss.
Roadside Tragedies and Hit-and-Run Risks on Maryland Highways
This heartbreaking incident highlights the serious dangers pedestrians face even when pulled safely to the shoulder of a highway. Changing a tire on the side of a busy interstate like I-695, especially during the early morning hours when visibility is low and traffic speeds are high, can be incredibly hazardous.
Hit-and-run collisions are especially devastating, as they compound the trauma by denying victims timely aid and leaving families with unanswered questions. In this case, the failure of the driver to stop and assist has turned a tragic accident into a criminal investigation.
Maryland law requires all drivers involved in an accident, especially those resulting in injury or death, to stop and render aid or contact emergency services. Fleeing the scene not only endangers lives but also carries serious legal consequences, including felony charges.
The Maryland State Police continue to seek help from the public. Anyone with dashcam footage, eyewitness accounts, or knowledge of a red Toyota Tacoma with recent front-end damage is urged to contact investigators immediately.
For the Dunkley family, the grief of this sudden loss is compounded by the uncertainty and injustice left behind. Community support, legal guidance, and compassionate outreach are vital during the difficult days that follow such a loss.
If you or someone you love has been affected by a fatal crash, especially a hit-and-run, it’s crucial to seek both justice and support.
