September 19, 2025

Barry Co, MO (September 19, 2025) – A tragic hit-and-run accident claimed the life of a pedestrian Wednesday night on MO-39 in Barry County near Shell Knob. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 9:20 p.m. when an unknown vehicle struck a 35-year-old female pedestrian from Springfield. The driver fled the scene before authorities arrived.

Emergency responders rushed the victim to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, where she was later pronounced deceased by medical staff at 11:08 p.m. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, her injuries proved fatal. Officials have confirmed that next of kin have been notified.

Troopers, including TPR T.R. Williams and MCIU Team 3 along with TPR J.L. Cleeton, assisted in the investigation. Authorities are actively searching for the vehicle and driver involved in this deadly crash.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this incredibly difficult time.

Pedestrian Fatalities in Missouri

The fatal hit-and-run on MO-39 underscores the dangers pedestrians face on Missouri’s roadways, particularly in rural areas where lighting and visibility are often limited. Pedestrian crashes in Barry County and other parts of the state frequently involve factors such as impaired driving, speeding, or distracted driving, and when a driver leaves the scene, it compounds the tragedy by delaying medical assistance and denying accountability.

Missouri continues to see troubling numbers of pedestrian fatalities each year. Troop D, which covers southwest Missouri, reported this case as its 96th roadway fatality for 2025. These incidents highlight the urgent need for both motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution—drivers by slowing down and remaining vigilant, and pedestrians by using crosswalks and reflective clothing whenever possible.
