Baton Rouge, LA (August 23, 2025) – A late-night police chase in Baton Rouge ended in tragedy Wednesday, leaving one person dead and two others critically injured. According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the pursuit began shortly after 10:00 p.m. in the Mall City area when officers attempted to stop a 2020 Honda Accord for a traffic violation.
The driver, identified as 24-year-old Janae Fieldings, allegedly refused to stop and fled onto Lobdell Avenue. During the pursuit, officers reported that someone inside the vehicle discarded a firearm, which was later recovered and identified as a Glock handgun illegally modified with a machine gun conversion device.
The chase continued westbound on Greenwell Springs Road before the vehicle lost control near North Foster Drive around 10:08 p.m. The Honda struck a water line, a wooden fence, and the rear of a business before coming to rest. The vehicle sustained major damage and caught fire.
Responding officers used multiple fire extinguishers to suppress the flames and pulled Fieldings and two passengers from the wreckage. Despite their efforts, Fieldings was pronounced dead at the scene. The two passengers were transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
The Baton Rouge Police Department’s investigation into the crash and chase remains ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Janae Fieldings and our thoughts to the two passengers fighting to recover.
Police Chase Crashes in Louisiana
Crashes involving fleeing vehicles are among the most dangerous roadway incidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities for drivers, passengers, and bystanders. In Wednesday night’s case, a two-minute pursuit in Baton Rouge ended in catastrophic consequences—one life lost, two critically hurt, and significant property damage.
Police chases are particularly dangerous because of high speeds, erratic driving, and unpredictable maneuvers. In urban areas like Baton Rouge, narrow streets, dense traffic, and roadside structures increase the likelihood of violent crashes when pursuits occur.
Victims of chase-related crashes often suffer traumatic injuries requiring extensive medical care. Survivors may face lengthy rehabilitation, loss of income, and emotional distress. Families of those killed must cope with sudden grief and unexpected financial burdens.
For the Baton Rouge community, this incident highlights ongoing concerns about both reckless driving and the dangers of high-speed pursuits. Law enforcement agencies nationwide continue to evaluate pursuit policies, balancing the need for enforcement with public safety.
