Beaufort County, NC (January 12, 2025) – A fiery crash involving a gasoline tanker and an SUV shut down a major highway in Beaufort County on Friday afternoon, causing significant disruptions and injuries. The incident occurred on U.S. 264 near Mile Rd, just outside Belhaven, at approximately 1:30 p.m.
According to the Beaufort County spokesperson, the collision resulted in the SUV rolling over while the gasoline tanker caught fire in the middle of the road. The tanker, which was carrying approximately 2,600 gallons of gasoline, erupted into flames, producing smoke and fire leaping 20 to 30 feet into the air. Emergency responders acted swiftly to control the blaze and assist the injured.
Both drivers involved in the crash sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries remains unknown at this time. The highway was closed for several hours to ensure public safety and allow emergency crews to clear the scene.
