Belfair, WA (May 14, 2025) – A fatal multi-vehicle crash on State Route 3 near Belfair Elementary School left one driver dead and several vehicles damaged, including a patrol car from either Mason or Kitsap County. The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is actively investigating the incident, which occurred Tuesday morning and led to significant disruption in the area.
The crash occurred near the school grounds and involved multiple vehicles. According to WSP Trooper John Datillo, the driver determined to have caused the crash died at the scene. Although a law enforcement vehicle was struck in the collision, the officer involved reportedly did not sustain serious injuries.
The aftermath of the crash extended onto school property, with one of the vehicles coming to rest in the parking lot of Belfair Elementary. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among students, staff, or pedestrians in the area, and classes continued as scheduled.
WSP troopers closed off sections of SR 3 to facilitate the crash investigation and to safely clear debris and damaged vehicles from the roadway. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and further details—including the number of total vehicles involved and the sequence of events—have yet to be confirmed.
Our sincere condolences go out to the family of the individual who lost their life in this tragic event. We also extend our thoughts to all others impacted by the crash.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes in Washington
Multi-vehicle collisions are among the most dangerous incidents on Washington roadways, especially when they occur near schools or involve public safety personnel. Tuesday’s fatal crash on SR 3 in Belfair brings added gravity due to its proximity to Belfair Elementary and the involvement of a law enforcement vehicle.
SR 3 is a heavily traveled route through Mason County, serving as a primary connector between residential areas and business districts. Crashes along this highway are not uncommon, and when multiple vehicles are involved—as in this case—the resulting damage, injuries, and fatalities can be severe.
What makes this incident particularly concerning is the location. Accidents near schools raise serious safety concerns for families and residents. Fortunately, no one on school grounds was hurt, and the timely response from WSP and local emergency personnel helped prevent further harm.
The presence of a patrol car in the crash also underscores the dangers faced by officers while performing their duties. Even when emergency responders are not the primary cause of a collision, they are often placed in high-risk scenarios due to their frequent roadside presence.
For the family of the deceased, this tragedy marks the beginning of an incredibly difficult journey. Fatal accidents result in both emotional devastation and practical burdens such as funeral costs, investigations, and legal complexities. Families affected by fatal collisions must know their rights and the resources available to them.
