Pedestrian Safety and Highway Dangers in North Carolina
Pedestrian crashes on high-speed roadways like I-95 are rare but often deadly due to the significant speed and size of vehicles involved. In North Carolina, pedestrians account for a notable portion of annual roadway fatalities, with nighttime incidents on interstates posing some of the highest risks.
On highways, drivers typically have little warning and limited ability to avoid a person in the roadway. For pedestrians, the combination of low visibility, lack of safe refuge, and high vehicle speeds creates extremely dangerous conditions. Law enforcement agencies recommend that anyone stranded on an interstate remain off the roadway, call for assistance, and wait in a safe location away from traffic.
Investigations into fatal pedestrian crashes often rely on witness accounts, dash camera footage, and forensic analysis to determine the sequence of events and whether any contributing factors, such as impairment or mechanical issues, played a role.
