Benson, VT (July 15, 2025) – Vermont State Police responded to a serious two-vehicle crash on Mill Pond Rd in Benson on Saturday, July 13, involving a rollover and multiple children. Authorities have since confirmed that two children were injured, and one driver has been arrested for driving under the influence and multiple other charges.
The crash occurred when 32-year-old Jamie Curavoo, a Benson resident, was driving a 2007 GMC Yukon westbound and collided with a 2008 Honda Odyssey driven by 42-year-old Sarah Stanley of Fair Haven. The vehicles impacted at their front corners, causing Curavoo’s SUV to lose control, leave the roadway, and overturn.
Inside the Yukon were two children, ages 9 and 6. The 9-year-old suffered moderate injuries, while the 6-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center for treatment. Stanley’s vehicle sustained minor front-end damage, and neither she nor her two children, ages 9 and 5, were injured.
Police said that Curavoo showed signs of impairment at the scene. After a roadside evaluation, he was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence, Negligent Operation, and Cruelty to a Child. He was processed at the Castleton Police Department and issued a court citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court, Rutland Criminal Division, on July 28, 2025.
We extend our thoughts to the children injured in this incident and wish them a full and speedy recovery.
DUI Crashes and Child Passenger Injuries in Vermont
The crash on Mill Pond Rd in Benson underscores the grave consequences of impaired driving—especially when children are involved. DUI-related crashes are among the most preventable yet continue to cause serious harm on Vermont’s roadways. When young passengers are subjected to high-speed collisions, particularly rollovers, the injuries can be severe and life-altering.
In this case, Vermont State Police responded swiftly and followed protocol to assess both injury impact and driver behavior. The fact that two children sustained injuries in an impaired-driving crash raises broader concerns about passenger protection and accountability. State law imposes additional charges, including Cruelty to a Child, when minors are endangered in DUI cases—a measure intended to deter this dangerous behavior.
The rural roads of Rutland County, like Mill Pond Rd, often lack the margin for error. Reduced lighting, narrow lanes, and high speeds amplify the risks posed by an impaired or reckless driver. In communities like Benson and Fair Haven, where families frequently share the road with commuters and out-of-town travelers, crashes involving children hit especially close to home.
For families affected by such incidents, the aftermath includes far more than physical recovery. Emotional trauma, financial strain, and the legal process all compound the challenges faced by victims. Fortunately, resources exist—from victim support services to legal and medical guidance—to help families cope and move forward.
